I did some careful testing of the two units I bought, shooting some test targets and evaluating the deviations from true white in Photoshop. The panels need about a 30 point magenta correction to yield an accurate green/magenta balance in controlled studio use if the camera white balance is set to daylight. I find that one can use 1/4 minus green gel filter with pretty good results. Why filter if you can (somewhat) fix the white balance in PhotoShop? Because you might want to use them mixed with some daylight and you'll instantly see that you have a choice (unfiltered) between correcting for the LEDs and letting the daylight go magenta or correcting for daylight and letting the LED's go green. But if you know this the color correction with gel filters is pretty straightforward and engenders only a loss of about 1/3-1/2 stop.So far the units both work well and it's nice to have them set up with four switches that control four banks of lights. This allows you to conveniently cut down on output in a repeatable manner. The lights a fairly bright but I find that when I want to do portraits I generally put two of these lights thru a big diffuser and that eats light. I usually end up shooting at 1/60th f2.8 ISO 400. But I'm used to working on a tripod and working with adult portrait subjects so that's not too bad.The units work well when we do video. It's great here in Texas to have lights that don't generate any appreciable heat. That keeps the studio cooler and means we can turn off the AC when we're recording sound. Here's what I like: 1. Soft light 2. Decent construction 3. Flexible power control 4. No heat. 5. Easy to attach gel filters 6. Consistent from unit to unit 7. Low power consumption 8. No recycle time to worry about 9. Fewer blinks from portrait sitters. 10. WYSIWYG lighting. Here's what I don't like: 1. Imperfect color rendering (not a jpeg only light!!!) 2. More power would be nice. 3. Should have bought the ones that also accept 12 V DC power supplies. 4. I wish the beam spread was tighter.I was initially hesitant to buy these because the product photo with the orange background is so damn bad, but at half the price of the tiny Lite Panels Micros I felt like a I could take the risk. All in all I'm happy with what I got. $20 bucks worth of 1/4 minus green (a magenta filter) gel and I'm good to go. They would have been perfect lights back in the days of black and white portraits.......I look forward to the next generation to come out of China! Should be another step forward.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. »» Read more about ePhoto 500 LED Ultra Bright Video Photography Light Panel Light Panel LED Lighting LED Panel Head by ePhoto INC 500LED.
